574 Teachers Said What Kindergartners Need. Academics Came Fourth.

Ask the people who receive five-year-olds what they actually need, and letters come in fourth. The skill they name first is the ability to be told no and stay in one piece. Here is what survives when you check that against the longitudinal research, including the 2007 paper that cuts the other way.

Education Week asked teachers on social media what skills an incoming kindergartner most needs to succeed. 574 responses came back. The most common answer was not letters, not counting, not early reading. It was emotional self-regulation. Education Week grouped the responses into themes, and academic skills came fourth, behind attention and independence.

Start with the limit, because it matters: that was an open call on Facebook and LinkedIn, not a probability sample. It is testimony from the people who receive five-year-olds every August, not measurement. So take it as testimony, then go find the measurement.

One response, verbatim: "Ability to handle disappointment when told no."

That is the bar those teachers are describing. Not the alphabet. The ability to be told no and stay in one piece.

The answers had clocks on them

Education Week printed the responses it grouped under regulation and attention. A few of them, from three named respondents: "Some impulse control: ability to wait and take [a] turn." "Being able to tolerate not getting what they want (especially at the exact moment they want it)." "Able to listen to a short story." "Being able to sit still for more than 30 seconds." "Ability to attend to something non-preferred for more than 2 minutes."

Notice the units. Thirty seconds. Two minutes. Those are not descriptions of a personality. They are descriptions of a capacity with a duration, written by adults who can tell you roughly how long it currently lasts.

The measurement exists separately

In January 2026 the EdWeek Research Center ran a nationally representative survey of 1,163 early educators and administrators who work with children in pre-K through 3rd grade. Different instrument, same direction.

59 percent said student behavior has worsened over the past two years.

72 percent said following instructions was more challenging for their current students than it was for students of the same age two years ago.

54 percent said the same about tying their own shoes.

Among educators who teach children who are mostly 5 or younger, fewer than half agreed that their students effectively regulate their emotions during class time. Education Week's June write-up puts a number on the disruption: 49 percent of preschool teachers said student behavior interrupts instruction multiple times a day.

The shoe-tying number is the one I keep coming back to. It is not academic and it is not emotional. It is a two-handed sequence a child has to stay with through repeated failure. Same capacity, different setting.

The honest objection

The strongest argument against all of this is a 2007 paper, and it deserves a straight answer instead of a dodge.

Duncan and colleagues, Developmental Psychology, 2007, pooled six longitudinal data sets. The strongest predictors of later reading and math achievement were math skills at school entry, then reading, then attention. Measures of socioemotional behavior, including internalizing and externalizing problems and social skills, were generally insignificant predictors of later academic performance.

Read that carefully, because the distinction carries the whole argument. Attention predicted. Socioemotional behavior did not.

Now go back to what the teachers actually listed. Waiting your turn. Sitting still. Attending to a task you did not choose, for two minutes. Handling no. Almost none of that is social skill. It is effortful control, and effortful control sits on the attention side of Duncan's split.

Being a pleasant kid is not the variable. Being able to hold your attention on something you did not pick is.

What the long-run evidence says

Robson, Allen and Howard, Psychological Bulletin, 2020: a meta-analysis of 150 studies, 745 effect sizes, 215,212 participants, 25 distinct outcomes. Childhood self-regulation was related to achievement, interpersonal behavior, mental health, and healthy living later in life. Task-based and teacher-report measures showed stronger associations than parent-report ones, which is worth knowing before you trust your own read on your own kid.

That achievement finding sits in tension with Duncan, and the likely reason is what each one measured. Duncan tested behavior ratings. Robson pooled self-regulation measures that include the effortful, hold-it-in-mind kind.

Moffitt and colleagues, PNAS, 2011, followed a cohort of 1,000 children in Dunedin, New Zealand from birth to age 32. Childhood self-control predicted adult physical health, substance dependence, personal finances, and criminal offending, and the effects could be disentangled from intelligence and social class. In a separate British cohort of 500 sibling pairs, the sibling with lower self-control at age 5 was more likely by age 12 to have started smoking, to be doing worse at school, and to show antisocial behavior, despite the shared family background. That second piece runs childhood to adolescence, not childhood to 32, and it is the one that makes "it was really just the household" hard to hold.

These are population associations, not forecasts. Nobody can tell you what an individual child will be at 32, and I am not going to.

Why we optimize the wrong thing anyway

Letters are legible. You hold up a card, the answer is right or wrong, and you can see progress today.

Waiting is not legible. There is no card for it. The performance happens in a checkout line, at somebody's birthday party, ten seconds after you said no. And you mostly notice it when it fails.

So ambitious parents pour effort into the countable thing. That is not ignorance. It is a measurement problem. We work on what we can see moving.

What practice actually looks like

I am not going to oversell the intervention research, because it does not support overselling.

McClelland and colleagues, Frontiers in Psychology, 2019, ran a cluster-randomized trial of a circle-time game program across 13 Head Start classrooms, randomized at the teacher level, with 157 children in the analyzed sample. The games work by flipping a rule: red light now means go. On the self-regulation task, the combined intervention effect did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.082). Math scores did improve significantly. Children who started lowest in self-regulation showed a significant additional benefit.

Mixed, reported honestly. What that trial gives you is not a program to buy. It gives you the mechanism: a rule that has changed, held in mind, against the impulse to do the old thing.

The mechanism does not need a curriculum. It needs an adult who notices the moment.

The moment is boring and it shows up ten times a day. Your child wants the thing now, and you say in a minute. What happens during that minute is the repetition. Most of us shorten the minute, because the minute is unpleasant for the adult too. That is the honest reason it does not get practiced, and it is a more fixable reason than not knowing it matters.

Three versions of the same repetition:

Name the wait before it starts, and keep it short enough that it can actually finish. A wait the child completes is a rep. A wait you cave on is a rep in the other direction.

Play games where the rule reverses. Freeze, opposite day, Simon Says with a twist. That is the structure the Head Start trial used, and it costs nothing.

Leave the sequences that contain failure alone. Shoes, zippers, pouring the water. Those are the tasks we take over because we are late and it is faster to do it ourselves. They are also where a child practices staying with something that is not working yet.

None of this is a plan for a specific child, and none of it is diagnostic. If something about your child's development worries you, your pediatrician is the person to ask.

The part I built

This is most of why Prodigy works the way it does. The problem with self-regulation is not that parents do not know it counts. It is that the repetitions are invisible, they arrive at inconvenient moments, and there is no flashcard to tell you one went well. So Prodigy works the parent's side of it: what your child is ready to practice at this age, where those moments already sit inside an ordinary day, and a record of what is actually getting practiced rather than only what is easy to count.
